Why 4G?

The fourth generation of the wireless network is what 4G stands for. The first generation was the analog (1G) network, then the digital (2G) network which was followed by the 3G network that we currently have today. 4G refers to all IP packet-switched networks, mobile ultra broadband access and multi-carrier transmission.

The new network is going to give users an experience like no other. Consumers will be able to download at high speeds, view and stream live videos, and we can only imagine what the mobile gaming industy is going to do. The possiblity of what an application can do is now going to be further than ever before.

4G is cell phone revolution that we need; and Sprint is way ahead of the pack. 4G is currently being offered in 27 markets and their are plans to continue rolling out new markets, including Boston, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.

Sprint is currently offering 4G in Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Portland, San Antonio and Seattle.

Sprint states they currently cover more than 30 million and by the end of 2010 they hope to have coverage for 120 million.

Great Apps

In search of the best apps for Android? Take a look at our list of some of the best apps on the market. Our featured app for May is Wertago, a self-titled application that bills itself as “The mobile application nightlifers have been waiting for”. I have to say that this is a great app. I recently used this app when I was in Nashville, Tn and I enjoyed being able to see what people said about the nightlife. It really helped me when choosing where to have drinks. I would have liked using it a little better if I had friends that used the app as well. It would have been nice to use the app to its full potential.  I would highly recommend taking Wertago for a spin, and since the app is free you have nothing to lose.

Have an app that you enjoy? Suggest it to us and we may feature it.

Below is a list of some of the most recent apps that we have downloaded and reviewed. Take a look at them and give your FEEDBACK.

Wertago: Billing itself as “the mobile application nightlifers have been waiting for,” Wertago is a social networking application that lets users coordinate social events with their friends, rate current hotspots and create personalized social networking profiles for users to share their favorite  locations. Like many other Android applications, Wertago uses Google Maps API to map out different clubs, restaurants and theaters. This application was developed by Kelvin Cheung, Teresa Ko, Peter Ree, Robert Sarvis and Douglas Yeung.

Dial Zero: Quickly dials the customer service numbers of over 600 companies and skip directly to a person. Don’t wait through annoying voice prompts any longer. Dial Zero is useful, fast, and simple. Learn tips from other users who share how they got what they wanted from these companies (refunds, canceling their account, etc.). Unfortunately, calling many of these companies is frustrating–we hope the app helps you feel more in control
Qik: Live video streaming over 3G or Wi-Fi, which one-ups the others with support for full res 720×480 DVD quality video from the Droid
Astro: An Android task manager to kill useless background processes is mandatory, at least if you want your phone running at top speed. Oh, and Astro happens to be a pretty damn good file manager, too.
Google Voice simply changes the way you use your phone, and the app’s seamless integration is a killer feature for Android as a whole. Get in line for an invite, if you haven’t already.
PDA Net: The ridiculously easy way to tether your laptop to your phone, over USB or Bluetooth, without rooting it. If you don’t wanna cough up $30 for the full version it’ll still connect to non-https:// addresses just fine.
Life 360: We’ve made our top Life360 services accessible through a smartphone application you can use on any Android phone (more phones coming soon!). Currently you can use Life360 mobile to access our Emergency Messenger and Tracker services, as well as access the medical and emergency information uploaded from our Life360ID product.

Where To Purchase

Don’t wanna wait till the HTC EVO hits the shelves? Best Buy and Radio Shack have you covered with preordering. Beginning this month, customers can go into their local stores and place your order to ensure that you have the phone when it is launched. Customer will still have to go into the store to pick it up on the day as well. Sprint retail stores will begin carrying the EVO beginning on June 4th. Both customers of the Sprint stores, and big box retailers, will get the phone at the price of $199.99 with the only exception of Sprint stores having a mail in rebate process and the big box retailers offering instant mail in rebates.

Radio Shack has a plan to ensure that you preorder with them. Radio Shack will be offering a free $20 accessory gift card when you put down a $50 deposit on the HTC EVO. Customers will be able use the gift card when you pick up your EVO. If you choose to preorder, make sure that you pick up the handset on either the 4th or 5th, due to Radio Shack not holding phones past two days.

Sprint’s 4G Plans Explained

Sprint is leading the pack with the only 4G device. We have an understanding of what the EVO can do, but what is 4G?

WiMax, the name of the 4G network, stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access.  4G is very similar to Wi Fi and is similar to 802.16e and offers speeds up to 10Mbps, and uploads of 1Mbps. At this point in time, Sprint is the exclusive provider of 4G. While 4G is great for the time being, the rest of the cellular providers, ATT, Verizon, and T-Mobile, will be pursuing the LTE, Long-Term Evolution. Sprint subscribers should not worry about LTE though, CEO Daniel Hesse has stated that if LTE becomes the normal that Sprint would consider changing over due to the fact that the change would not be that difficult.

Sprint would jump on the LTE bandwagon if they had not been so aggressive at acquiring WiMax with its acquisition of ClearWire.Sprint has been testing the 4G network with a few devices, including the OverDrive mobile hot spot. The Overdrive allows users to connect up to 5 devices at the same time. While the device is amazing in itself, it does have a flaw that lies within the plan. Sprint offers the Overdrive at a rate of $59.99 a month with a cap of 5GB when on the 3G network, while on the 4G it is unlimited for the same price. Sprint has stated that they will continue to not have a cap on any of the handsets they offer.

If saving money is your game, you should consider purchasing the EVO and dropping the Overdrive. The EVO has a built in feature that allows you to connect up to 8, yes 8, different devices for around $30 extra a month.

With the transition to the 4G network Sprint users will finally be able to talk on the phone and use data services at the same time. At this time, CDMA does not offer the ability to use both features at the same time.

As state previously in another post, Sprint will require all EVO users to have, the $69.99 Everything Data plan. Users will also be required to pay the $10 data fee for the use of the 4G network, reguardless if the area has 4G or not. At this time, Sprint offers 4G in 32 markets with another 18 set to be up this summer.

The 32 markets include Georgia–Atlanta, Milledgeville; Hawaii–Honolulu, Maui; Idaho–Boise; Illinois–Chicago; Maryland–Baltimore; Nevada–Las Vegas; North Carolina–Charlotte, Greensboro, (along with High Point and Winston-Salem), Raleigh (along with Cary, Chapel Hill and Durham); Oregon–Portland, Salem; Pennsylvania–Harrisburg, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Reading, York; Texas–Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Corpus Christo, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, Killeen/Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, San Antonio, Waco, Wichita Falls; Washington–Bellingham, Seattle.

Sprint hopes to launch 4G in Boston, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, St. Louis, Washington D.C., and more by the end of the year. You can keep track of 4G coverage in your area by visiting Sprint’s 4G site.

Hitting the shelves this June 4th, only for Sprint, the EVO will leave you speechless; loaded with any, and everything, that you would want. How does a mobile hotspot with dual cameras, a HDMI output and FM tuner sound?

After the announcement at CTIA, we were left practically breathless at the specs. But is it worth it?

You will get a chance to decide for yourself after taking a look at the pros and cons list below.

Pros

The pros list is easy – it’s a list of what the EVO offers:
* 8.0 megapixel camera
* 4G (via WiMAX)
* HDMI out to your HDTV
* 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
* Wi-Fi
* 4.3-inch screen
* FM tuner
* 720p video recording and playback
* 1 GB built-in memory
* Option to pick either the Sense UI or the stock Android experience
* Live video sharing via Qik
* Mobile hotspot capability for up to 8 Wi-Fi enabled devices
* Visual voicemail
* 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera
* microSD card slot
* GPS, compass, proximity and motion sensors
* Sprint apps (Sprint TV, NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile)
* Social networking integration and access to Android Market’s 30,000 plus apps
* 512 MB RAM

Cons

Personal taste aside, the EVO has more pros than cons. Some might say that having Adobe Flash, a built in kickstand, and the data plan pricing are major cons, but again this is mostly personal taste. Why would Adobe Flash be considered a con? Well if you enjoy decent battery life then you might as well never use the internet, as this will eat your battery considerably. Sprint has not anounced if the all inclusive $99.99 plan is going to include the hotspot, but I would assume that this feature will indeed cost the extra fee per month.

Some might view the price of the EVO as a con, at the almost $200 mark, but with all pros the device is priced competitively.

Pricing

If you want to experience EVO then you will have to have, at least, the Everything Data 450 plan. The plan starts at $69.99 a month and if you want 4G then you will have to shell out $10 dollars more. Not only will you be paying for the 4G, but if you plan on using the phone as a hotspot expect to pay an extra $29.99 for that service. You should take into consideration that this is much cheaper than having the phone plus a data card.

4G Coverage

Does your city have 4G? If not, you might want to reconsider paying the extra price for the handset. Sprint is continuing to build out the 4G network, but it will take time. Sprint has released that at least 18 new cities will be getting 4G by this summer. You can find a list of the cities on Sprint’s website.

Getting the Rebate

If you are not keen on mail in rebates you should consider making your purchase from retailers such as Best Buy or Radio Shack instead of the Sprint corperate stores. It is a considerable trade off, but if you choose to purchase from a Sprint store you can expect better service and “Ready Now” to have you understanding the phone. If you do not mind waiting for the rebate, I would consider purchasing from them. Radio Shack also has a great deal if you choose to preorder the EVO. If you go that route you will receive a $20 gift card that can be used on accessory purchases.

Worth It?

After looking at the price, both monthly and device, is it really worth it? The device has tons of features, but does it add up to the cost. And what about when Android goes 2.2? It has been stated that the next version will have the ability to connect to Wi-Fi hotspots.

Despite everything, this device looks great. I plan on purchasing one for myself, if that means anything.
